Frequently Asked Questions

General Clinic & Eligibility Questions

The clinics are run at the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Palmerston North, New Zealand on the weekends only.

We offer cat desexing, including microchipping, and lifetime registration. We do not provide any other clinical services and recommend that you register with a local veterinary practice to provide ongoing care for your cat/kitten. We do not desex any other species (dogs, birds, rabbits, etc).

Female cat spays are $25

This includes: desexing, lifetime microchipping, and lifetime registration with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register.

Male cats neuters are $15

This includes: desexing, lifetime microchipping, and lifetime registration with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register.

The cost of microchipping and registration is included courtesy of the SPCA.   Our prices are low because the clinics are entirely run by volunteers and subsidised with donations from other organisations.

The Massey SPCA Desexing Programme is only for Community Service Card, Gold Card, and Massey Student ID holders. If you do not have a current card (one of the above three), we are unable to desex your cat.

We ONLY accept cash.  Payment MUST be made when you are dropping your cat off on the morning of your appointment.  We do not have ATM facilities on campus.

Your kitten needs to be at least 1.5kg in weight, which is usually around 15 weeks of age.

Complete the online registration form to schedule an appointment at the following link:

We usually release clinic dates 3 months in advance.  You will be able to confirm available dates at the end of the registration process (page 3 of our form).  We will announce the opening of further dates on our facebook page:

Due to our very long waiting list, we cannot allow no shows to rebook. By not showing up, this is taking the place of a cat that could have come in from our waiting list.  If you do not show up, your name will be registered as a no-show in our system and you will not be confirmed for further appointments with us.

Due to our very long waiting list, you will be moved to the bottom of our waiting list to the lowest priority. By canceling at the last minute, you are taking the place of someone from our waiting list that could come in with their cat.

Yes, we need to verify the card is in your name, and that it is current/valid on the morning of your appointment. If you do not bring it with you, we are unable to continue with the surgery. You cannot use someone else’s card to have your cat desexed.

No, there is no limit, so long as they are all owned by you, or a close family member such as a parent.

Yes, you can book in more than one cat, as long as there are spaces left on that day.  We have had clients bring in 4 cats at one time.

Yes, after filling out Step 1 (first page), you will go to Step 2 (Animal Info), and Step 3 (Appointment Date).  Once you select a date in Step 3, the form will automatically go back to a blank Step 2, where you can add additional cats under your name.  You can do this multiple times.

Surgery Questions

The surgeries are performed by veterinary students under supervision by a teaching veterinarian registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.

We can still perform the desexing surgery as long as your cat is more than 7 days away from delivering.

Your cat cannot be desexed until 2 weeks after the kittens are weaned (stop nursing) before we can perform the surgery. This is to allow time for the mammary glands to stop producing milk, reducing the risk of any complications.

A cryptorchid cat is a male where one or both testicles have not fully descended into the scrotum.  Depending on where the testicle is located, we may have to make an additional incision into the abdomen to find and remove the testicle. If an incision into the abdomen is required, an additional $10 will be charged, making the total cost $20.

Clinic Day Questions

Yes, your cat needs to be brought in contained in a safe carrier. It can be a closed cardboard box with slits made for breathing or something similar, if you do not have a proper carrier. Do not carry your cat without a carrier. This is very dangerous, as your cat may escape your arms and run off outdoors. You may not be able to find your cat if this happens.

Drop off is at 8am for female cats and 8:15am for male cats. If you have both female and male cats coming in at once, please arrive at 8am. Please do not come earlier than 8am, as we will not be able to let you in. Our volunteers are in the process of setting up for the day prior to 8am.

Pick up is promptly at 2pm, unless we have called you/texted you advising of another time.

We will be waiting for you. Please do not ring the main doorbell as this notifies the emergency and ICU department. They are extremely busy dealing with critical patients, and this is very disruptive to them. Please patiently wait for us to let you in. If you are not let in within 5 minutes, you can send us a text on our mobile number (021 763 043) and someone will come to let you in.

If you don’t have a friend or family member able to help you, please let us know. We are happy to fill out the forms for you or help you fill them out.
